GOD CALLS EVERYONE TO ‘FULL-TIME CHRISTIAN SERVICE’

제가 대학에 다닐 때, 저는 영적으로 깨어나는 초기 단계에 있었습니다. 하나님에 대해 더 많이 알고 싶은 관심이 생겼고, 그 당시 저와 같은 생각을 하는 사람을 알지 못했기 때문에 종교 관련 과목도 두어 과목 수강했습니다. 그러나 제가 들었던 수업들이 마치 페인트가 마르는 것을 바라보는 것처럼 전혀 영감을 주지 않게 느껴지면서, 저의 호기심은 한동안 꺾이고 말았습니다.

When I was in college, I was in what I would call the early stages of a spiritual awakening. Since I felt an interest in learning more about God – and at the time did not know any other people who were thinking that way – I even enrolled in a couple of religion courses. My curiosity was squelched for a time, however, when the classes I attended seemed as inspiring as watching paint dry.

저는 종교적 소명을 추구하는 대신 글쓰기에 관심을 두기 시작했고, 그것이 제게 가장 잘 맞는 일이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 저는 저널리즘 분야에서 두 개의 학위를 받았고 지역 신문 편집자가 되었습니다. 10년 동안 신문 기사를 쓰고 편집하면서도, 하나님께서 저를 그곳에 두셨다고 생각했던 순간은 단 한 번도 기억나지 않습니다. 그 기간 동안 저는 이미 예수님을 따르는 사람이 되었음에도 말입니다.

Instead of pursuing some kind of religious vocation, my focus shifted to writing, which I found was the perfect fit for me. I earned two degrees in journalism and became a community newspaper editor. Over my 10 years of writing for and editing newspapers, I do not recall a single moment when I thought that I had been placed there by God. Even though I had become a follower of Jesus during that time.

그러나 지금의 CBMC(Christian Business Men’s Connection)로 알려진 단체의 스태프로 일하면서 상황은 크게 달라졌습니다. CBMC 잡지와 여러 출판물의 편집자로서, 저는 그리스도를 향한 믿음에 헌신할 뿐만 아니라 일터에서 그분을 섬기고 나타내고자 하는 비전을 가진 많은 남성과 여성을 만났습니다.

That changed dramatically when I joined the staff of what is now known as Christian Business Men’s Connection (CBMC). As editor of the CBMC magazine and other publications, I met many men and women who were not only devoted in their faith to Christ but also shared a vision for serving and representing Him in the marketplace.

곧 저는 믿음과 일 사이에서 느꼈던 괴리감이 드문 일이 아니라는 것을 깨달았습니다. 제가 다니던 교회에서 사람들에게 “그리스도의 대사”(고린도후서 5:20)로 살아가는 것에 대해 이야기하면, 그들은 종종 어리둥절한 표정을 지었습니다. 그들이 이해하는 주님을 섬기는 삶이란 목회자나 신부, 선교사처럼 어떤 형태로든 전임 종교 사역에 종사하는 것이었습니다. 그러나 실제로 이것은 그들의 오해였습니다.

Soon I realized the disconnect I had sensed between my faith and my work was not unusual. When I talked with people in the churches I attended about being “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20), they often responded with blank stares. To serve the Lord, in their understanding, was to enter some form of full-time religious work, like being a pastor, priest or missionary. In reality, this was a misunderstanding on their part.

Martin Luther, who played a central role in the Protestant Reformation in the early 1500s, had a correct biblical grasp of how faith and work can and should intersect. He wrote, “Every occupation has its own honor before God. Ordinary work is a divine vocation or calling. In our daily work no matter how important or mundane we serve God by serving the neighbor and we also participate in God's on-going providence for the human race.” Work and faith should be integrated, not segregated.

루터는 그리스도인에게 두 가지 부류가 있다는 생각을 깨뜨리는 데 도움을 주었습니다. 곧 목회자나 선교사처럼 “전임의 전문적인 기독교 사역”을 하는 사람들과, 교회 의자에 앉아 그 “전문가들”의 사역을 위해 기도하고 후원하는 “평신도”가 따로 있다는 것입니다. 이렇게 생각해 보십시오. “시간제 그리스도인”이라는 것은 존재하지 않습니다. 우리는 하루 24시간, 일주일 내내 예수님을 따르든지, 아니면 전혀 따르지 않는 것입니다. 그리고 그분을 따르는 자로서 우리는 그분의 이름으로 하나님과 다른 사람들을 섬기도록 부름 받았습니다. 그러므로 모든 신자는 전임 기독교 사역에 참여하고 있습니다.

Luther helped to dispel the notion that there are two different classes of Christians – those in “full-time, professional Christian service” (such as ministers and missionaries) and “laypeople,” those in the pews who pray for and support the work of the “professionals.” Think of it this way: There is no such thing as a “part-time Christian.” We are either following Jesus 24/7 or not at all. And as His followers, we are called to serve Him and others in His name. By definition, all believers are in full-time Christian service.

모두가 예수님의 지상명령에 참여합니다. 예수님께서는 부활하신 후 승천하시기 전에 제자들에게 마지막 가르침을 주셨습니다. 그들 중 누구도 신학교나 종교 학교에 다닌 적이 없었습니다. 예수님께서는 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아… 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라. 볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라” (마태복음 28:19-20) 우리는 예수님을 따르는 것 뿐만 아니라, 다른 사람들도 그분을 따르도록 가르치고 세워야 합니다.

All involved in Jesus’ Great Commission. Following His resurrection and before ascending to heaven, Jesus had final instructions for His followers, none of whom had attended seminary or any religious school. He told them, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). We are not only to follow Jesus but also teach and equip others to follow Him as well.  

우리가 하는 모든 일은 주님을 섬기는 일입니다. 하나님께서 이 세상에서 행하시는 일에 참여하기 위해 교회나 종교적인 환경에 있어야 하는 것은 아닙니다. “또 무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하고 그를 힘입어 하나님 아버지께 감사하라… 무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라” (골로새서 3:17, 23)

Everything we do serves the Lord. We do not have to be in a church or religious setting to be engaged in the work God is doing in this world. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him…. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” (Colossians 3:17, 23).

어쩌면 여러분은 지금까지 여러분의 일을 하나님께서 정하신 소명 또는 부르심으로 진지하게 여겨 본 적이 없을 수도 있습니다. 적어도 지금까지는 말입니다. 이 새로운 이해를 가지고 하나님께서 여러분이 어떻게 나아가기를 원하시는지 기도하십시오.

This week might be a good time for you to recommit your work, responsibilities and the people you work with to the Lord, asking and inviting Him to work through you as His ambassador. Or perhaps you have never seriously regarded your work as a divinely ordained vocation or calling. At least not until now. Pray about how God wants you to proceed with this new understanding.

가까운 친구들, 신뢰할 만한 조언자들, 멘토 또는 참여하는 CBMC 모임의 동역자들에게 서로를 위해 기도해 달라고 요청하십시오. 또한 고린도전서 3장 9절에서 말하는 “하나님의 동역자”가 되고자 하는 소망 안에서 서로 지지해 달라고 요청하십시오.

Ask some close friends, trusted advisors, a mentor or a CBMC group you are involved in to pray with one another and provide mutual support in your desire to be “God’s fellow worker” as 1 Corinthians 3:9 describes it.
